Exhibition summary

The Cemetery of St. Marx is Vienna's last remaining Biedermeier cemetery, noted for its unique atmosphere with ancient gravestones and lush vegetation. It is famously known as the resting place of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, though his exact burial spot is now marked by a monument.

Curatorial context

The Cemetery of St. Marx, located in Vienna's 3rd district, stands as the city's final surviving example of a Biedermeier cemetery. It offers a unique atmosphere characterized by ancient gravestones, impressive mausoleums, and abundant vegetation, particularly vibrant in spring when lilacs bloom. The cemetery gained significant fame as the burial site of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who was interred here on December 6, 1791. While the precise location of his original grave is no longer known, a monument marks the presumed spot. A later reinterment of Mozart's remains in the late 19th century led to their current location in Vienna's Central Cemetery. Notably, no one has been buried here for the past 150 years, transforming the Cemetery of St. Marx into a preserved time capsule after the opening of the Central Cemetery. It offers a vivid glimpse into the funerary culture of the Biedermeier period through its gravestones and epitaphs. Beyond its historical significance, the site is also a crucial refuge for the critically endangered European hamster, adding an ecological dimension to its unique character.
