Curatorial context
The Ernst Fuchs Museum is situated in a villa originally built by Otto Wagner between 1886 and 1888, intended for himself and his wife. The villa, a Jugendstil gem, was a renowned meeting place for the artistic elite of the time, including figures like Gustav Klimt, Adolf Loos, and Gustav Mahler. After falling into disrepair and undergoing significant changes following expropriation during the Nazi era, the villa was revitalized in the early 1970s by the artist Ernst Fuchs. Fuchs, a prominent proponent of Fantastic Realism, renovated and adapted the property, dedicating two years to the process. Today, the museum displays his paintings, sculptures, and furniture, preserving his artistic legacy within this historic architectural context. Notably, a second, more modern Otto Wagner villa from 1912/13 stands nearby.
