Foto Arsenal Wien is a new center for photography and lens-based media in Austria, housed in a renovated brick building in Vienna's Arsenal. It focuses on presenting national and international photographic art through approximately ten rotating exhibitions annually.
Vienna has a new dedicated center for photography and lens-based media with the opening of Foto Arsenal Wien. Situated in a renovated 1959 brick building within the historic Arsenal complex near Vienna's main train station, this institution aims to present and convey photography in all its forms. It functions not as a museum with its own collection, but as a central exhibition house that makes national and international works and collections visible. With around 1,000 m² of exhibition space, Foto Arsenal Wien plans to host approximately ten rotating exhibitions per year. The focus will be on historical, national, and international themes at the intersection of the analog and digital worlds, as well as between static and moving images.
The center offers a broad program of exhibitions and educational activities, with a focus on art and visual media literacy, including special programs for children and youth. The upper floor houses seminar rooms for workshops and an analog darkroom. Notably, the Foto Wien festival is also linked to this new center. The building also includes the 'Filmmuseum LAB' for archiving and restoration from the Austrian Film Museum, as well as a café. Its location places it within a rich cultural environment, adjacent to institutions like the Burgtheater, Vienna State Opera, Belvedere 21, and the Heeresgeschichtliches Museum.
