Curatorial context

The Heeresgeschichtliches Museum delves into the military history of the Habsburg monarchy, covering the period from the late 16th century up to the dissolution of the empire in 1918, and extending to 1945. The museum's focus is on the army's role and the nation's military heritage, including its maritime history. The museum building itself is a significant historical monument, constructed between 1850 and 1856 as the central part of the Arsenal complex, designed by Ludwig Förster and Theophil Hansen. Its architectural style blends Moorish-Byzantine and Neo-Gothic elements, predating much of the Ringstrasse's development. Inside, visitors can find exhibits on various periods and figures, including a notable display featuring the car in which Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife were assassinated, the Archduke's blood-stained uniform, and a chaise longue on which he died. The Marinesaal (Naval Hall) is a highlight, showcasing Austria's significant maritime power during the time it had sea access for over 200 years.
