Exhibition summary

Klimt's monumental Beethoven Frieze, created in 1902 for the Secession movement's exhibition, is an opulent and ornamental artwork inspired by Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. Originally intended to be dismantled, it was later acquired by the Republic of Austria and is now permanently accessible to the public.

Curatorial context

Gustav Klimt's iconic Beethoven Frieze, a significant work from 1902, was originally created for an exhibition by the Secession movement as an homage to Ludwig van Beethoven. This monumental artwork, measuring thirty-four meters wide and two meters high, is described as an opulent, ornamental "symphony" that sought to visually interpret Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, particularly Richard Wagner's rendition. Initially slated for dismantling after the exhibition, the frieze was purchased by a collector in 1903 and later acquired by the Republic of Austria in 1973. It was then made accessible to the public in 1986 in a dedicated room within the Secession building. The Secession itself continues to showcase contemporary art through changing exhibitions, and visitors can still experience the Beethoven Frieze, often in conjunction with guided tours. Reproductions of the frieze and books about Klimt are available at the museum shop.

Admission and ticket notes

The Secession building is devoted to contemporary art in changing exhibitions, which can be viewed during guided tours (also in conjunction with the Beethoven Frieze). Information regarding admission or booking is available via the Secession website. Reproductions and books are available at the Museum Shop.
