Uncover Austria's Sensational Criminal Past and Justice History at Vienna's Kriminalmuseum Exhibition

The Kriminalmuseum (Criminal Museum) in Vienna showcases Austria's most sensational crimes and methods of capital punishment over the centuries. Housed in one of Leopoldstadt's oldest buildings, it features exhibits ranging from medieval crime reports to modern newspaper articles, covering topics like murder, political crime, and serial offenders.

The Kriminalmuseum offers visitors a stark look into Austria's criminal past, documenting sensational cases from medieval times to the present day. Exhibits include historical crime reports, broadsheets detailing the lives of famous criminals, and contemporary newspaper articles, covering a spectrum of offenses from poisoning and crimes of passion to cases involving serial killers like Jack Unterweger. The museum also addresses political crime in Austria, from 19th-century unrest and assassinations to modern kidnappings and hostage situations, alongside the evolution of police investigative techniques. Featuring crime scene photos, court documents, and relics of executed criminals, the site serves as an unusual memorial to the death penalty. The adjacent Alt-Wiener Café in the courtyard provides a contrasting, more relaxed atmosphere. Audio guides are available in multiple languages.
