Curatorial context
The Church of St. Leopold at Steinhof, designed by Otto Wagner, stands as a significant example of Art Nouveau architecture and is recognized as the first modern church building in Europe. Its distinctive feature is the dome, covered in gold-plated copper plates, which is visible from afar, perched above the former psychiatric hospital complex.
Constructed between 1904 and 1907, the church is considered a key work of the Viennese Art Nouveau movement, bearing stylistic resemblances to other notable structures like the Secession building and the cemetery chapel at the Vienna Central Cemetery. Wagner was deeply involved in the interior design, including the lighting fixtures, pews, and altars, harmonizing practical considerations with aesthetic principles. The interior decoration also benefited from the collaboration of other artists, such as Kolo Moser, who created the stained-glass mosaics, and Othmar Schimkowitz, responsible for the angelic sculptures.
Admission and ticket notes
The church is open seasonally from early May to early October, Tuesday to Friday from 10:00 to 17:00, and Saturday to Sunday from 11:00 to 17:00. Access is currently restricted for wheelchair users and individuals with mobility impairments due to steps at the main entrance, although the interior is step-free.
