Curatorial context

Otto Wagner, a seminal architect of Vienna's Art Nouveau period, designed the Stadtbahn pavilions around 1900. He envisioned the railway system as a significant contribution to the city's appearance, meticulously attending to both grand structures and minute details like railings and lamps to achieve a cohesive design concept. Following the conversion of the Stadtbahn lines into subway lines, several station buildings were restored, including the elegant Stadtbahn Pavilions at Karlsplatz, distinguished by their marble slabs and gilded ornamentation. One of these two Stadtbahn Pavilions is open seasonally and hosts an exhibition by the Vienna Museum, focusing on Otto Wagner's work with drawings and models of notable projects like the Church at Steinhof and the Postal Savings Bank. The other pavilion is incorporated into a café. Wagner's substantial bridge over Wienzeile and the Wien River, now used by the U6 subway line, has also been preserved.
