Curatorial context
The Austrian Parliament, located on Vienna's prestigious Ringstraße, is a pivotal building in Austrian history and a masterpiece of classical architecture. Recently undergoing extensive renovation, the building now showcases its grandeur with renewed splendor. The adjacent Palais Epstein is one of the most significant Ringstrasse palaces, also designed by Theophil Hansen.
The Parliament building, in use since December 4, 1883, hosts approximately 280 sessions annually for the National Council and the Federal Council. Visitors can marvel at the renovated National Council chamber with its impressive glass roof and modern furnishings inspired by historical designs, as well as the historic chamber modeled after an ancient theater. The expansive 1,000 m² Column Hall, adorned with 24 monolithic marble columns, serves as an impressive reception and event space. The building's architecture, designed by Theophil Hansen in the style of Greek Classicism, features elements like columns, a triangular pediment, and statues of ancient goddesses such as Pallas Athene and Nike.
Since 2018, the building has been comprehensively renovated, resulting in a new visitor center, the 'Demokratikum'. This center features 27 interactive media stations providing insights into the history and structure of Austrian democracy, allowing visitors to compare their own political views with those of their representatives. The library and reading room offer further opportunities for learning, with special programs for children and young people. Visitors can also freely observe National and Federal Council sessions from a glazed gallery and participate in diverse guided tours focusing on the political institution, architecture, and the numerous artworks integrated after the renovation. The tour "Democracy.Power.Places" explores the development of Austrian parliamentarism around the Wiener Heldenplatz.
Palais Epstein, also designed by Hansen, is the only Ringstrasse palace open to the public for free guided tours. Originally built as a "rent palace" housing owners, tenants, and staff, it now serves as a venue for parliamentary events, committee rooms, and offices. Its classical architectural style complements that of the Parliament, offering a glimpse into the opulent residential architecture of the late 19th century.
