Curatorial context
The State Hall (Prunksaal) of the Austrian National Library is a breathtaking example of baroque architecture, recognized as one of the world's most beautiful library spaces. Spanning nearly 80 meters long and 30 meters high, it is crowned by a magnificent fresco by Daniel Gran depicting the 'deification' of Emperor Charles VI, who commissioned the library in 1723. The hall houses over 200,000 historical books from 1501 to 1850, displayed in 128 ornate wooden shelves. Notable collections include approximately 15,000 volumes from Prince Eugene of Savoy and a significant collection of Martin Luther's writings.
Beyond its vast collection of historical texts, the State Hall also features two large baroque globes, an earth and a celestial globe, each over a meter in diameter. The hall underwent extensive restoration in 2022, focusing on cleaning and preserving the gilding, stucco, marble, stone, metal decorations, and wooden bookshelves. While the books are too fragile to be read, the State Hall primarily serves as a showcase of imperial heritage and a stunning architectural experience. It is a key attraction within the Hofburg Imperial Palace complex.
