Exhibition summary

Experience the Spanish Riding School in Vienna, home to the world-renowned Lipizzaner stallions and classical equestrian art. Visitors can witness the highest standard of horse-riding skills in the baroque ambience of the Imperial Palace, a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage.

Curatorial context

The Spanish Riding School stands as the world's sole institution dedicated to preserving and practicing classic equestrian skills (haute école) in their original form. Through years of dedicated training, riders and their Lipizzaner stallions achieve a seamless unity, culminating in unforgettable presentations of movement and harmony set to music. Gala performances showcase these unique displays within the stunning baroque riding hall, originally designed in the 18th century for aristocratic riding instruction. The horsemanship practiced here has been recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage since 2015. Visitors can also gain insight into the daily "Morgenarbeit" (morning training), which reveals the rigorous practice behind the horses' athletic routines, from relaxation exercises to perfecting specific techniques. This training transforms natural movements into refined School routines through targeted strengthening and conditioning.
