Curatorial context
St. Michael's Church, located on Michaelerplatz near the Hofburg, is a significant historical site in Vienna, with its oldest late Romanesque elements dating back to the first half of the 13th century. Rebuilt and extended over centuries, its current form largely dates from 1792. The church holds a poignant place in music history as the site where parts of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s famous Requiem were first performed during his funeral on December 10, 1791, commemorated by a plaque within the church. Excavations in front of the church have also revealed remains of a Roman settlement.
Particularly drawing visitors are the church's catacombs, known for their unusual preservation environment that prevents decomposition. Between 1631 and 1784, approximately 4,000 people were buried here, and hundreds of coffins, along with mummified corpses in period attire, are still visible. The crypt is the final resting place of Pietro Metastasio, a librettist for some of Mozart's operas. Public guided tours of the crypt are available, offering a unique glimpse into Viennese history and burial practices.
