Curatorial context
The State Hall of the Austrian National Library is a spectacular Baroque library room, renowned as one of the most beautiful of its kind globally. Its impressive architecture includes a grand dome adorned with a vibrant fresco by Daniel Gran depicting the deification of Emperor Charles VI, who commissioned the library in 1723. The hall itself is nearly 80 meters long and 30 meters high, featuring 16 statues of Habsburg rulers and nobility. It houses over 200,000 historic books dating from 1501 to 1850, arranged on 128 richly decorated wooden shelves. Notable collections include approximately 15,000 volumes from Prince Eugene of Savoy and a significant collection of Martin Luther's writings. The space also exhibits two exquisite Venetian Baroque globes, one terrestrial and one celestial, each over a meter in diameter. The hall underwent a significant restoration in 2022, involving deep cleaning of timber surfaces, replacement of wood pieces, and meticulous attention to its decorative elements, frescoes, sculptures, and columns, ensuring the preservation of its valuable books and heritage.
