Curatorial context

The Wien Museum Hermesvilla, nestled within the Lainzer Tiergarten, invites visitors to step back in time to the era of Empress Elisabeth. Originally gifted to her by Emperor Franz Joseph I as the 'Schloss der Träume' (Palace of Dreams), the villa was constructed between 1882 and 1886 by the renowned architect Carl von Hasenauer, a key figure of the Vienna Ringstrasse. Named after the statue of the Greek messenger goddess Hermes in its garden, the villa stands as a testament to late Romantic villa architecture. Its interiors are lavishly decorated by prominent artists of Historicism, including Gustav Klimt and Franz Matsch. Today, the villa serves as a museum, with an exhibition on its first floor detailing the history of the house and its imperial residents. Exhibits include personal artifacts belonging to Franz Joseph and Elisabeth, as well as original furniture that evokes the grandeur of their time. The Empress's bedroom, notably, features a grand bed dating back to the era of Maria Theresa.

Admission and ticket notes

Admission is free on the first Sunday of each month. The regular price is €8, with a reduced price of €6. Tickets are available online and on-site. The villa is open Friday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00.
