This augmented reality exhibition in the Az W courtyard explores the historical anti-fascist monuments in former Yugoslavia. It investigates their current state, from instrumentalization and neglect to destruction, and uses multi-channel video installations, 3D spomeniks, photographs, and sound collages to present an artistic approach to this history.
In the courtyard of the Architekturzentrum Wien (Az W), the exhibition "Stones Between the Fronts" offers an immersive augmented reality experience focusing on the commemoration sites of the anti-fascist resistance in former Yugoslavia. Visitors can gather information on the political, social, and historical background of these monuments, many of which were built between 1950 and 1980 under Tito's rule.
Once symbols of solidarity, these stone testimonials now often exist in bleak states—instrumentalized, forgotten, neglected, or destroyed—reflecting the political and social disunity in the new nation states. The project was partly inspired by the curators' experience witnessing the politically motivated destruction of Bogdan Bogdanović's Partisan necropolis in Mostar. The augmented reality exhibition, accessed via QR codes, features multi-channel video installations, two full-size 3D spomeniks, photographs, and sound collages, presenting an artistic reflection on the ambivalent treatment of these places of remembrance. The exhibition is a project by Melanie Hollaus and Christoph Lammerhuber, in cooperation with MuseumsQuartier Wien and Architekturzentrum Wien.
