Discover "Die grüne Apotheke": An Exhibition on Medicinal Plants, Botany, and Pharmacy History

This exhibition explores the historical connection between botany and medicine, tracing the evolution of medicinal plant gardens (horti medici) from their origins to modern pharmaceutical research. It highlights the ancient and ongoing global reliance on medicinal plants for healthcare.

The exhibition "Die grüne Apotheke: Vom Hortus Medicus zur Pharmaforschung" (The Green Pharmacy: From the Hortus Medicus to Pharmaceutical Research) delves into the profound and long-standing relationship between botany and medicine. It highlights how the very first botanical gardens were established as "horti medici," or medicinal plant gardens, with the primary purpose of cultivating plants for essential medical supplies. The exhibition underscores the deep-rooted tradition of herbal medicine, which spans thousands of years across diverse cultures and remains the primary source of medical treatment for a significant portion of the world's population today. It is estimated that approximately 30,000 different plant species worldwide are utilized for medicinal purposes. Visitors will gain insights into the historical development of plant-based medicine and the processes involved in preparing herbal remedies.
