The 2nd International Congress of Historical Botanical Gardens will take place in Vienna, focusing on the conservation and preservation of plants and historical gardens. It aims to build upon Vienna's long tradition of plant research and conservation, fostering dialogue on protecting heritage from modern threats.
Vienna is set to host the 2nd International Congress of Historical Botanical Gardens from July 29th to July 31st, 2024. This significant event will unfold across various locations, including the Austrian Federal Gardens in Schönbrunn, the Natural History Museum Vienna, and the Botanical Garden of the University of Vienna. For over 450 years, Vienna has been a pivotal center for collecting, cultivating, studying, and exhibiting plants, establishing itself as a crucial site for both contemporary and historical plant research and conservation.
The congress will place a strong emphasis on the conservation and preservation of plants and gardens, addressing critical issues such as the impact of resource scarcity, climate change, and conflicts on historical botanical gardens and their heritage. Participants will explore what lessons can be drawn from past challenges and how to safeguard these invaluable botanical assets for the future. This event builds upon the success of the 1st International Congress held in Lisbon in 2021, which aimed to raise public awareness about the significance of botanical gardens, their history, and to establish a common network. The Austrian Federal Gardens, in collaboration with the Botanical Garden of the University of Vienna, the Natural History Museum Vienna, and the International Association of Botanic Gardens (IABG), are organizing this continuation.
