Of breath and sound: A Captivating Sound Installation at the University of Vienna Botanical Garden

This sound installation, 'Of breath and sound,' explored the fundamental act of breathing and its dependence on other living organisms, specifically highlighting the relationship between human exhalation and plant life. It was presented within the Tropical House of the Botanical Garden.

The sound installation 'Of breath and sound' delves into the multifaceted layers of breath, emphasizing its role as a primary, shared act of existence for countless organisms, which is entirely dependent on the life of others. The exhibition posits that the air we breathe is not a mere geological or mineral reality, but a byproduct of other living beings—the 'life of others.' It highlights the interdependence within ecosystems, suggesting that human breath, a seemingly personal and unconscious act, is intrinsically linked to the respiration of plants. The installation was housed in the Tropical House, a setting that naturally underscores the vibrant exchange of gases crucial for life. The project was created by Angélica Castelló, Natalia Dominguez Rangel, Lorena Moreno Vera, and Lucía Simón Medina. It draws philosophical inspiration from the concept that breath connects all life, a concept echoed in the dependency of life on the 'byproduct' of other life forms. The exhibition invites contemplation on the fundamental, often unnoticed, biological processes that sustain existence.
