Wiener Schule der botanischen Illustration: A Captivating Exhibition in Vienna Exploring Art and Science.

This exhibition showcases botanical illustration, a significant art form bridging science and art, with roots in Vienna dating back to the Botanical Garden's founding. It features works by 20 artists, focusing on endangered plant species from the Pannonian and Alpine regions.

The exhibition "Wiener Schule der botanischen Illustration" delves into the rich tradition of botanical art, an important link between scientific research and artistic expression, with a history in Vienna stretching back to the founding of the Botanical Garden of the University of Vienna. For seven years, in collaboration with the Zoological-Botanical Society of Austria and the Botanical Garden, courses in botanical illustration have been held, led by the internationally acclaimed artist Margareta Pertl. The exhibition focuses on plant species from the Pannonian and Alpine regions, many of which are threatened in their natural habitats and are cultivated and researched within the Botanical Garden's Pannonian Group and Alpine Garden. Intense engagement with these endangered plants, both as painters and viewers of illustrations, fosters a deeper understanding and appreciation for these botanical treasures and the critical need for their protection. A complementary catalog featuring plant depictions reinforces these intentions, countering the transience of plants through their representation on a durable medium. This act of visual documentation provides a stable basis for shared exchange regarding the captured subject. Twenty exhibitors are contributing their artwork. During the exhibition, Margareta Pertl will be working on her illustrations within the exhibition space, offering visitors an opportunity for discussion and exchange.
