The Donaustädter Weinhügel, located in the Hirschstetten Botanical Gardens, showcases important grape varieties from Vienna and Lower Austria. Planted as part of an educational project, it allows visitors to learn about different wine types and cultivation methods, including traditional Austrian training systems.
The Donaustädter Weinhügel, situated within the Hirschstetten Botanical Gardens, serves as an educational display dedicated to viticulture. This vineyard area was established through a learning project involving students from the Weinbauschule Klosterneuburg, who planted the vines and created an environment for visitors to learn about various wine types and winegrowing methods.
The vineyard showcases key grape varieties significant to the Viennese and Lower Austrian regions, such as Grüner Veltliner, Rheinriesling, Weißer Burgunder, Müller Thurgau, Blauer Zweigelt, Blauer Portugieser, Blaufränkisch, and Gutedel. In addition to the grapevines, the area also features fruit trees typical of the region's vineyards. Visitors can observe different vineyard training systems, including stock culture and the Lenz Moser system, providing insights into the practice of Austrian wine cultivation. To enhance the immersive experience, a traditional 'Hiatahütte' (vineyard hut) has been erected amidst the vines, complemented by dry stone walls, a characteristic rose bush, and peach trees, all contributing to the atmosphere of a genuine wine-growing area.
