Explore the Englischer Garten, a meticulously designed English-style garden within the Hirschstetten Botanical Gardens, featuring three distinct sections. This tranquil space showcases a variety of English roses, complemented by a rich array of perennial flowers, ornamental grasses, and shrubs.
The Englischer Garten at Hirschstetten Botanical Gardens is a thoughtfully designed landscape inspired by English garden architecture, with contributions from garden architect Philippa O'Brien and the British Embassy.
The garden is elongated and segmented into three independent areas by hedges and tree groupings: an entrance section, a middle part, and a rear section. Each area offers a unique, self-contained experience, complete with benches for visitors to relax and admire the wide selection of English roses and their accompanying plants. Popular companions for the roses include upright, blue-purple ornamental sage, fragrant lavender, catmint, and silver-leaved lamb's ear, alongside colorful flower-forming plants like purple coneflowers. Various grasses are also incorporated for their diverse growth habits and foliage colors.
The entrance and rear sections are designed to emulate a traditional English country garden. Here, the English Rose takes center stage, framed by perennials and shrubs against a backdrop of green hedges. The central part of the garden features a prominent perennial bed within a square layout, bordered by fragrant climbing roses and flowering perennials. Airy pergolas mark passages to the other garden sections, connecting the three distinct zones, while a line of trees borders the northern edge of the garden.
