Exhibition summary

Curatorial context

The Hirschstetten Botanical Gardens presents an expansive Irrgarten, or maze, covering 2,600 square meters with nearly a kilometer of paths. Unlike a simple labyrinth, this maze is designed with branching paths, dead ends, and loops to provide a genuine sense of disorientation. Originally planted with privet, the hedges were replaced in 2021 with native field maple (Feldahorn), a versatile plant used for trees, shrubs, and trimmed hedges. The dense, newly-grown green walls are meticulously shaped through annual pruning to become even more impenetrable. At the heart of the maze lies a small viewing platform, offering a vantage point over the intricate layout. Integrated into the maze's design is a bird education trail; information panels detailing various bird species are placed along the paths, transforming the experience of navigating the maze into an educational journey about local avifauna.
