This digital exhibition investigates the historical context of the 1918 influenza pandemic, focusing on why it became erroneously known as the 'Spanish Flu.' Because neutral Spain did not have strict wartime censorship, its newspapers were among the few to report openly on the virus, creating the false impression that it was a uniquely Spanish phenomenon. In contrast, the Habsburg Monarchy and other European states suppressed information to maintain morale, downplaying the severity of the illness as 'influenza and a cold' even as it spread among the population.
