Exhibition summary

This group exhibition challenges the liberal model of solidarity based on empathy, focusing instead on difference, dissent, and incomprehension as potential foundations for collective alliance. It explores how solidarity can begin where mutual understanding ends, yet still foster care and shared action.

Curatorial context

The group exhibition 'Leakage, Breaching, Motley Tongues' delves into the complexities of solidarity in an era marked by racial capitalism, (post)colonial necropolitics, and neo-fascism. It critically examines the limitations of liberalism's promise of freedom, equality, and individual rights, which can obscure systemic violence and structural inequalities. Drawing on the concept of 'imperfect solidarities' by Aruna D'Souza, the exhibition posits that solidarity can emerge and be practiced beyond unity, mutual understanding, and empathy. It investigates how divergence, contradiction, mistranslation, and incomprehension can serve as generative forces for political alliance. The exhibition features various artistic strategies that explore these questions, envisioning a movement toward deeper, more radical possibilities for collective action that embraces and preserves differences. This exhibition is a cooperation between Kunstraum Niederoesterreich and the PhD-in-Practice program of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. It brings together artists such as andrea ancira, Tekla Aslanishvili, Caitlin Berrigan, and others, who engage with these themes through diverse formal and conceptual approaches. The curatorial team, including andrea ancira, Gris García, Yen Noh, Vrishali Purandare, and Olga Zovskaya, supports this exploration of alternative models for solidarity.
