Silent Spills I is a live exhibition by choreographer Deva Schubert that explores the communicative and social phenomenon of gossip, using the metaphor of the leaking body. The exhibition draws attention to how bodily fluids transfer information and how gossip acts as a permeable channel for clandestine information, potentially democratizing knowledge and counter-narratives.
Silent Spills I by Deva Schubert focuses on the concept of gossip as a vital form of communication, drawing parallels to the body's natural release of fluids that signal internal states. The exhibition frames these 'secretions' as a transfer of information from the inside out, revealing internal states like inflammation or anxiety. Gossip, in this context, is presented as a similar process, relying on permeable social structures through which information seeps and is passed on. The artist questions who is permitted to speak, who is believed, and how knowledge circulates, staging gossip as a fleeting, polyphonic form of communication. Schubert aims to explore how gossip can democratize information and empower marginalized groups by reasserting everyday communication as a social force. The exhibition manifests as choreography across three performances and an installation featuring a multi-channel sound collage, utilizing whispers and choral singing to continue Schubert's exploration of the voice and the enduring impact of performance. 'Silent Spills I' celebrates the porous and the messy aspects of publicness, in contrast to the sanitized exchanges often found on social media.
An extended version of the exhibition, 'Silent Spills II', will also be presented at the donaufestival in Krems.
