Curatorial context

The group exhibition 'Subterranean,' curated by Sarah Johanna Theurer and Aditi Kapoor, brings together artists who employ narrative strategies to scrutinize the psychological tolls associated with contemporary infrastructures and commodities. The exhibition delves into the psychic frictions that arise from the systems governing our lives. While these systems often contribute to social separation and fragmentation, the artworks presented in 'Subterranean' strive to expose underlying connections and interdependencies. A significant element of the show is its emphasis on time-based media and its unique capacity to forge relationships across diverse temporalities. Sarah Johanna Theurer is a curator and writer specializing in time-based art and techno-social entanglements. Her work at Haus der Kunst in Munich involves curating research collaborations and exhibitions that examine the histories and futures of liveness, investigating how technologies influence artistic production, perception, and collective experiences. Her recent projects include the first comprehensive survey of filmmaker and net artist Shu Lea Cheang, a major new commission by WangShui, and '_Echoes_', a serial program dedicated to live, time-based, and networked practices. Aditi Kapoor is an independent curator whose practice focuses on contemporary media and performance, with a particular interest in time-based art. She is also active as a performance art producer and has collaborated with artists such as Firelei Báez, Christelle Oyiri, and Nicole Eisenman. Kapoor served as the curatorial assistant for John Akomfrah’s British Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2024. Her prior experience includes roles in the Publications department at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, at ISCP: International Studio and Curatorial Program, and with Montez Press Radio.
