Curatorial context

Between Strings is an interdisciplinary installation that merges sound, space, and movement. The exhibition features seven taut strings, spanning a combined length of five to ten meters, integrated with contact microphones, acoustic resonance chambers, and lights. As a large-scale string instrument, the strings are activated by touch as players or visitors move along them. The installation utilizes varying layers of amplification, including acoustic resonance chambers and a quadraphonic electronic speaker setup, to expand the sonic dimensions and create a varied, spatial experience that changes depending on the listener's position. The project reflects mumok’s ongoing focus on the connections between contemporary art and music. The collaboration with the ensemble 'Between Feathers' and composer Kirstine Lindemann highlights the parallels in musical experimentation and revolutionary ideas seen in art since the 20th century. The exhibition includes performances, artist talks, accompanying workshops, and daily guided hours, inviting the audience to explore the installation. The premiere of Lindemann's 50-minute composition 'String Theory' will be hosted by mumok as part of the exhibition.
