Exhibition summary

This exhibition focuses on Friedrich Kiesler's ongoing project for an 'Endless House' developed from the 1920s onwards. It highlights the visionary architecture, the model donated to mumok, and Kiesler's innovative design principles inspired by Viennese art and architecture.

Curatorial context

The Austrian-American architect, artist, designer, and theorist Friedrich Kiesler (1890–1965) dedicated himself to his ongoing 'Endless House' project from the 1920s. Although never built, this visionary architectural concept remains a significant work of twentieth-century design. mumok is showcasing a permanent presentation of this concept, featuring a key model of the 'Endless House' created in 1959, along with numerous sketches, drawings, and plans. This model, made of wire mesh and concrete, was part of a generous donation of approximately 30 works by Kiesler to mumok in January 2017 by collectors Gertraud and Dieter Bogner. Kiesler's design for the 'Endless House' drew inspiration from prominent figures in the Viennese art and architecture scene. Its open spatial structure reflects Adolf Loos's 'Raumplan,' while its integration of various arts aligns with Josef Hoffmann's vision of the 'Gesamtkunstwerk' (total work of art). The house's defining feature is its self-supporting, biomorphic form, similar to an egg, which eliminates the need for internal supporting walls or columns. Kiesler championed this 'endless' flexibility, allowing the unitary, seamlessly merged space to be easily adapted to the evolving needs of its inhabitants throughout the day and life cycle, addressing social issues related to domestic living.
