Exhibition summary

This exhibition explores the history of sexual minorities and trans people, emphasizing the importance of understanding their struggles for rights and emancipation. It aims to create awareness of queer hostility by examining past fights against discrimination and exclusion.

Curatorial context

Our history is not a given, and no standard curriculum teaches the history of sexual minorities and trans people. Yet, knowledge about the history of those who have faced similar oppression and fought for their rights is crucial for political and historical self-understanding. This exhibition, "Historicise yourselves!", aims to showcase ways of resistance and emancipation, contextualizing them within various discourses. By historically reappraising earlier fights against discrimination and exclusion, the exhibition seeks to foster an awareness that enables us to identify queer hostility in the present and stand against it. Discrimination has had and continues to have many faces, as does resistance against it, evident in the diverse forms of political organizing and activism throughout history. All these efforts share a common goal: the rebellion for a life of dignity and security. The exhibition makes debates and key cornerstones of queer activism in Vienna accessible through on-site displays, online content, and a brochure, inviting both those seeking to deepen their knowledge and newcomers to the topic.
