The artistic and curatorial project 'Gesellschaft & Wirtschaft' (Society & Economy) is based on Otto Neurath's 'Worker's Museum' concept. It centers on the occupation of the Vienna City Hall's Volkshalle by the Society and Economy Museum from 1927 to 1934. Neurath's development of the Vienna Method of Pictorial Statistics, later known as Isotype, aimed to translate complex socio-political and economic contexts into a clear and accessible visual language.
The exhibition reconstructs the exhibition model designed for the Volkshalle, using recycled plastic. This modular structure serves as a platform for contemporary Viennese, migrant, and international artistic positions. The presented research-based works engage with Neurath's engagement with Isotype, offering contemporary visual analyses of societal and economic conditions through architecture, art history, and labor and environmental research. These perspectives include artistic contributions focused on social rights for artists, support for war-displaced artists in Vienna, and activism for climate justice.
Neurath's vision of a museum as a space for collective discourse and reflection on society is particularly relevant today. 'Gesellschaft & Wirtschaft' thus becomes a space where society is constructed through the re-imagining, expansion, and critical questioning of current discourses on infrastructure and institutional participation, aiming for equitable access to shaping a future global community beyond citizenship.
