In addition to the chapel architecture, the site features a permanent exhibition providing a historical overview of medieval Vienna through objects and multimedia displays.

Curatorial context

The Virgilkapelle is a unique historical site situated in the heart of Vienna beneath the Stephansplatz subway station. Dating back to the 13th century, it was originally built as the foundation for the Maria Magdalena Chapel in the St. Stephen's cemetery. After being filled in during the 18th century, the structure was rediscovered in 1973 during the construction of the U-Bahn, revealing one of the city's most significant preserved Gothic interiors. Beyond its architectural importance, the site serves as a museum space. A compact exhibition provides visitors with a historical narrative of medieval Vienna, exploring the city's power structures, social organization, and the daily lives of its medieval inhabitants. The exhibition utilizes select historical objects and six multimedia stations to convey the context of the city during the Middle Ages, offering a rare look at a buried layer of Vienna's past.
