This exhibition, 'Schiele & Peschka: A Family Affair,' delves into the interconnected lives of two artistic families through the 'Peschka Collection.' It offers new insights into Egon Schiele's world by examining his brother-in-law's legacy and the extensive archive left to the city of Vienna.
The exhibition "Schiele & Peschka: Eine Familienaufstellung" (A Family Affair) sheds new light on the world of Egon Schiele by exploring the legacy of the "Sammlung Peschka" (Peschka Collection). This extraordinary archive, bequeathed to the city of Vienna, connects two artistic families through the marriage of Schiele's sister Gerti to the painter Anton Peschka, Schiele's close friend and colleague. Upon Anton Peschka Jr.'s death in 1997, the collection, intended to be made accessible to the public, was revealed to be a rich time capsule of creative Vienna in the early 20th century.
The "Sammlung Peschka" comprises not only significant paintings and drawings but also Schiele's studio furniture and a diverse array of collected souvenirs, decorative objects, art magazines, and books. The inclusion of hundreds of family photographs and letters provides invaluable material for reconstructing Schiele's life in relation to his closest family members. Newly discovered documents shed light on the previously unknown existence of Schiele's eldest niece, while other writings revisit a persistent question in Schiele research: did Anton Peschka create and sell works in the style of his famous brother-in-law? A particularly striking feature is Egon Schiele's original glass display cabinet, preserved with its contents, offering a personal "cabinet of curiosities" filled with books and objects collected by Schiele, presented publicly for the first time as an early example of an "artist's collection." Together, these elements offer a deeper understanding of Schiele's world and an intimate glimpse into the lives and ambitions of two artist families.
