Bedern Hall in York

The college was established in 1252 to house 36 vicars choral associated with York Minster. It was constructed on land donated by William of Laneham and funded through various land grants and property rents in York.

The chapel was built around 1252 using magnesian limestone. It originally consisted of a single internal space and was later modified in the 1340s when it was enlarged by demolishing and rebuilding the north wall.

The college grounds were improved in 1396 with the construction of a latrine and a bridge across Goodramgate. This allowed the vicars choral to access the Minster Close privately without needing to cross public streets.

Following the dissolution of the college during the Commonwealth of England, the site saw various uses, including hosting St Peter's School from 1644 until 1730.

The chapel underwent renovation in 1757 following a period of dilapidation during the 17th century, when its east gable had been rebuilt in brick.

In 1853, Bedern street was extended to the south-east to reach St Andrewgate, reflecting changes in the area as it became one of the city's poorest districts with a growing population of Irish emigrants.

The service wing of Bedern Hall, which contained a pantry, buttery, and a kitchen connected by a passageway, was demolished in 1879.

Following excavation by the York Archaeological Trust in 1977, Bedern Hall was restored and expanded in 1984. The site now serves as a venue for community events and is owned by local guilds.

In May 2021, Bedern Hall began opening regularly to the public for tours and exhibitions to showcase the heritage of the area, following a new heritage project.
