Yorkshire Museum Secures £2 Million Grant for Essential Roof and Infrastructure Upgrades
The York Museums Trust has received a £2 million capital grant to kick off critical repairs at the historic Yorkshire Museum. Awarded through Arts Council England’s Museum Estate & Development Fund (MEND) via the broader Arts Everywhere Fund scheme, the funding marks a major milestone in safeguarding the Grade I listed building and its nationally and internationally treasured collections.

Housed within a landmark structure originally built in 1827 across the grounds of St Mary’s Abbey, the institution cares for expansive collections spanning the Jurassic period, Mesolithic era, Iron Age, Roman occupation, Viking age, and medieval times. Among its celebrated holdings are rare artifacts such as the Middleham Jewel and the Coppergate Helmet.
Drawing approximately 80,000 visitors annually alongside thousands of school children and educators, the site plays a vital role in regional heritage. However, decades of structural evolution have introduced severe maintenance challenges.
Addressing Drainage and Weather Vulnerabilities
Later expansions to the original architecture created an intricate drainage network that struggles significantly during heavy rainfall. When torrential downpours occur, internal water flow has caused structural erosion and posed a direct threat to the building's fabric and preserved heritage objects.
The newly secured MEND allocation will directly fund urgent Phase 1 improvements. These works focus on redesigning and upgrading vulnerable roof sections, specifically targeting the main Tempest Anderson Hall and entry zones. While the overall project carries an estimated £5 million price tag, this initial phase will roll out over the next two years to stabilize the facility, with ongoing fundraising efforts underway for the remaining balance.
Leadership at the Trust notes that resolving these foundational infrastructure issues is essential for preserving the visitor experience and ensuring the cultural landmark remains sustainable for upcoming generations.
