Gagosian Basel Gallery

The Gagosian Gallery was founded in 1980 by Larry Gagosian, who opened his first gallery location in Los Angeles to showcase the work of young contemporary artists.

The gallery expanded its operations to New York City in 1989 with the opening of a space at 980 Madison Avenue, which held an inaugural exhibition featuring the work of Jasper Johns.

In 1991, the gallery opened its second location in New York City, situated in the SoHo neighborhood.

In September 1999, the gallery relocated its SoHo operations to a 25,000-square-foot space on West 24th Street in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood, designed by architect Richard Gluckman.

Gagosian Gallery became an international institution in the spring of 2000 with the opening of a London gallery on Heddon Street, designed by the architecture firm Caruso St John.

A larger second London gallery, also designed by Caruso St John, opened on Britannia Street in May 2004. At the time of its opening, it was the largest commercial art gallery in London.

The gallery expanded to Rome in 2007, occupying a refurbished former bank building on Via Francesco Crispi. The space was redesigned by architect Firouz Galdo in collaboration with Caruso St John.

In November 2010, the gallery opened its first location in Paris at 4 Rue de Ponthieu, a 350-square-meter space designed by Jean-Francois Bodin and Caruso St. John.

Gagosian Gallery established its first permanent gallery in Asia in 2011, opening a 5,200-square-foot facility at the Pedder Building in Hong Kong.
