Exhibition summary
Gagosian presents a thematic exhibition centered on Christo’s lifelong engagement with air as an intangible, essential medium. The exhibition features the first-ever realization of the large-scale indoor installation 'Air Package on a Ceiling,' alongside rare early works that explore the conceptual foundations of the artist’s practice.
Curatorial context
Organized around the theme of air, the exhibition unites a historic, previously unrealized large-scale installation with rare early works that distill the conceptual foundations of Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s practice. By sealing air within transparent, rope-bound polyethylene packages, the artists transformed the invisible into an intimate sculptural experience, proposing that meaning emerges not from the object itself, but from the act of its containment. These early gestures serve as precursors to the pair’s monumental environmental interventions, where wrapping obscures identity to reveal hidden sculptural properties.
Central to the exhibition is 'Air Package on a Ceiling,' a vast, internally illuminated form first conceived in 1968 for the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia. Realized here for the first time in collaboration with the Christo and Jeanne-Claude Foundation, the installation spans 16 by 10 meters and is suspended low enough to interact with the viewer's physical presence. Drawing on philosopher Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s theories of perception, the work invites visitors to navigate the space beneath it, creating a lived, atmospheric encounter that redefines the architectural environment.
