Gagosian presents GHOSTS, an exhibition of new mixed-media paintings by Eliza Douglas at the gallery’s Park & 75 location in New York. As the first in a series of solo presentations curated by Francesco Bonami, this exhibition marks a significant milestone as Douglas’s first solo show in the city and her debut at Gagosian. The works on display serve as a laboratory of fresh perspectives, reflecting the unique character of the venue while building upon Douglas’s ongoing practice of interrogating the boundaries of art, consumption, and authenticity through a diverse range of media, including painting, performance, and photography. In this body of work, Douglas reworks compositions previously exhibited at Air de Paris, layering them with manipulated UV prints derived from photographs taken by investigative journalist Leslie Kean. These source images, which capture phenomena interpreted as otherworldly, are superimposed onto the artist's canvases, creating a veil-like effect that obscures and complicates the viewer's perception. The exhibition engages with concepts of 'hauntology,' a term popularized by Jacques Derrida, reflecting on how the past persistently haunts the present in contemporary culture.
