Simon Hantaï Abstract Paintings Exhibition at Gagosian Gstaad Gallery

This exhibition features sixteen paintings from Simon Hantaï’s 'dernier atelier' (last studio) series produced between 1982 and 1985. These vibrant, abstract works showcase the artist’s signature folding and dripping techniques developed after his withdrawal from public life.

Gagosian Gstaad presents 'Simon Hantaï: the last studio,' an exhibition curated by Anne Baldassari that highlights sixteen works from the artist's final major creative period. During this time, Hantaï produced these intricate paintings, characterized by their bold colors and complex forms, which emerged from his pioneering 'pliage' (folding) technique. This method involved folding and knotting the canvas before painting, creating distinct patterns of pigment and reserve when unfolded. The 'last studio' works were created following Hantaï’s departure from the public sphere after representing France at the 1982 Venice Biennale. The exhibition also explores Hantaï's historical photographic portraits taken by his friend Édouard Boubat, which provide critical insight into the artist’s process and the original arrangement of his studio. The collection offers a rare opportunity to engage with the depth and stratigraphic complexity of Hantaï’s later practice.
