Gagosian presents 'Lately I Find a Sliver of Mirror Is Simply to Slice an Eyelid,' a comprehensive exhibition of photographs by Francesca Woodman (1958–1981). The show focuses on the artist’s deeply personal connection to Surrealism, featuring approximately fifty lifetime gelatin silver prints, a significant portion of which have never been previously displayed. Through her innovative use of composition and theatrical staging, Woodman captured herself and other models within both natural settings and weathered, dilapidated interiors to create profound expressions of self-exploration and dissociation. Throughout these works, Woodman incorporates symbolic objects such as seashells, gloves, and masks, often juxtaposed with the human form to destabilize the boundaries between the body and its environment. Her approach reflects a creative assurance and a fascination with the transformative power of allegory and language, themes deeply rooted in her studies at the Rhode Island School of Design and her time spent living in Italy.
