A monumental 15th-century panel painting, "Scenes from the Life of Saint Joseph," has been placed on long-term loan in the city, offering culture lovers and history enthusiasts a compelling new highlight to experience.

Measuring 64 by 203 centimeters, its unusually wide landscape format and detailed scenes depict various chapters in the life of Saint Joseph. Because the artist remains anonymous, the artwork is attributed to an unknown master of the region, adding an air of historical mystery to its brilliant craftsmanship.
The masterpiece is temporarily housed in Room 1 of the Groeningemuseum—a sister site to the historic Museum Sint-Janshospitaal under the Musea Brugge network. For visitors exploring the city's artistic heritage, the panel provides a wonderful point of comparison alongside the world-famous collection of Flemish Primitives, which features legendary local works by masters such as Jan van Eyck.
The Journey and Restoration of the Hoogstraten Panel
The painting normally resides in Saint Catherine's Church in Hoogstraten. However, the church has been undergoing extensive restoration works since 2017. To keep these precious cultural treasures safe, its recognized masterpieces are being cared for elsewhere until the church is ready to welcome them back in 2029.
Before arriving in Bruges, "Scenes from the Life of Saint Joseph" was transferred to the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (KIK) for essential conservation and scientific research. Having successfully completed its restoration, the brilliantly refreshed panel will remain on public display in Bruges until January 2027.
