Exhibition summary

In 'Feierobnd', photographer Jens Compernolle traces his German grandmother's history, traveling to the border region of Aue where Germany and the Czech Republic meet. The exhibition acts as a visual extension of her incomplete memoirs, exploring themes of heritage, identity, and the distance created by the Iron Curtain.

Curatorial context

For 'Feierobnd', photographer Jens Compernolle returned to Aue, his grandmother's birthplace on the border of Germany and the Czech Republic, to reconstruct her story. Following her death, which left her final sentence—and her personal history—unfinished, Compernolle sought to connect her past to his own identity. The project serves as a visual bridge, weaving together the silence of the past with his own contemporary search for connection. Compernolle, who studied photography at Narafi in Brussels, is known for capturing the hidden emotions of everyday life, often focusing on themes of nostalgia, abandoned places, and the beauty of the overlooked. Through these images, he creates a visual dialogue between his current home in Belgium and the distant, vanished world of his grandmother's origin, offering a meditative reflection on family history and the lingering echoes of the Cold War era.
