Exhibition summary

This exhibition features recent work by artist Lilian Walker, created in response to the collection at the Geophysical and Astronomical Observatory of the University of Coimbra. The project explores the intersection of artistic inquiry and scientific observation, using the human body as a field of perception to engage with instruments, history, and the surrounding environment.

Curatorial context

The exhibition 'The Tropics Have Pores' by Lilian Walker invites visitors to reflect on the relationship between scientific objectivity and the subjective experience of the body. By engaging with the observatory's diverse array of historical devices, images, and data, Walker transforms the space into a laboratory for sensory perception. Her work bridges the divide between the macro scale of celestial bodies and the intimate scale of human existence, using the body as a fundamental unit of measurement and observation. The works presented utilize hybrid languages, blending painting, object-based installations, movement, and sound to create a multi-sensory environment. By placing the artist’s research into dialogue with the observatory's unique collection, the project instigates a conversation about the boundaries between surface and depth, the visible and the latent, and the interplay between physical territory and scientific methodology. This initiative is part of the Convergent Program of the Anozero'26 Biennial.
