Curatorial context

Edward Quinn: Picasso and the Golden Years of the French Riviera is a comprehensive look at the work of a photographer who was granted unique, unguarded access to Pablo Picasso. Comprising 142 photographs selected from an extensive archive of over 40,000 images, the exhibition provides a rare glimpse into the artist's domestic life, his work process, and his interactions with family and friends. The narrative is divided into four thematic sections: a central focus on Picasso titled 'In Public and in Private: The Joy of Living,' complemented by three sections dedicated to the cinema, art, and the jet-set lifestyle that defined the French Mediterranean after the Second World War. Curated by Cristina Carrillo de Albornoz and produced in collaboration with the Edward Quinn Archives in Switzerland, the exhibition highlights Quinn’s documentary style, which favored spontaneity over artificial staging. By avoiding tripods and artificial lighting, Quinn captured authentic moments that reveal Picasso’s passion and exuberance. Through these images, the exhibition not only honors the personal and professional bond between photographer and painter but also serves as a vivid portrait of a legendary era in the French Riviera, where artists, aristocrats, and stars converged during the mid-20th century.
