Exhibition summary

This retrospective exhibition at Centro Cultural La Malagueta showcases the life and career of the renowned Magnum photographer Inge Morath. It features over 130 photographs, with a special focus on her rarely seen color work that spanned her entire career.

Curatorial context

Inge Morath. Retrospective offers an exquisite chronological journey through the life and artistic production of Inge Morath, one of the most influential photographers of the Magnum agency. Spanning from her early beginnings to her final years, the exhibition highlights Morath’s ability to approach subjects with profound respect, curiosity, and deep cultural insight. A central aim of this exhibition is to bring to light her extensive, often overlooked, body of color photography, which she utilized throughout her career despite a contemporary prejudice favoring black-and-white for serious artistic work. Featuring over 130 snapshots, the collection captures Morath’s humanistic approach to photojournalism and portraiture. Visitors can explore a wide range of her work, from iconic images of figures like Marilyn Monroe to candid portraits taken during her extensive global travels in countries such as Spain, Iran, and Mexico. Curated by Kurt Kaindl, Vittoria Mainoldi, and Dumia Medina, the exhibition also provides context on her long-standing relationship with her husband, playwright Arthur Miller, and her role as a pioneering female photographer within the Magnum agency.
