Exhibition summary

Womankind by María María Acha-Kutscher is a long-term project featuring digital photo collages that build a fictional archive of women's history. The exhibition resignifies historical images to critique patriarchal narratives and celebrate female agency, struggles, and private lives.

Curatorial context

Womankind is a long-term artistic project that utilizes post-production and collage techniques to reframe the history of women as represented since the invention of photography. By gathering and recontextualizing numerous images from illustrated magazines, antique books, advertisements, and digital media, artist María María Acha-Kutscher creates a fictional archive that challenges hegemonic and paternalistic historical records. The series included in this exhibition reflect on key milestones, such as the early 20th-century suffragette movement and the impact of the contraceptive pill, highlighting both the political struggle and the private complexities of female identity. This exhibition at Centro Cultural La Malagueta brings together over 500 images, including large-scale vinyls, polyptychs, and video works spanning from 2010 to the present. Featured series range from reflections on war-time roles in 'Machine' and autobiographical explorations of identity and migration in 'Todas mis sangres' to personal narratives on aging and menopause in 'Recuerdo las noches cuando solía dormir'. Curated by Sema D'Acosta, the show serves as a testament to the ongoing dialogue regarding feminist movements and the critical need to preserve a female-centered collective memory in modern society.
