Curatorial context

The exhibition El Matador presents a comprehensive look at the world of bullfighting through the lens of photographer Sandro Miller. The collection features 101 black-and-white photographs printed on cotton paper, documenting Miller’s journey alongside the legendary bullfighter Joselito during his 1997 tour. Beyond the action in the arena, the exhibition offers an intimate glimpse into the life surrounding the bullfighting tradition, including quiet moments in hotel rooms, rituals before the performance, and the tension present in the bullpens. Inspired by Ernest Hemingway’s 'Death in the Afternoon' and historical photographic illustrations, Miller traveled over 9,000 kilometers to capture a multi-faceted portrait of the bullfighter and his peers. Curated by Anne Morin, the exhibition also highlights numerous other notable figures who participated in that legendary tour. The display premiered at La Malagueta, a location historically significant to Joselito's career, and provides a timeless look at the speed, emotion, and discipline inherent in this cultural tradition.
