Architecture Without a Center: Archipelagos Exhibition at MUCAC - La Coracha

This exhibition explores contemporary Spanish architecture through an archipelago of independent, interconnected practices that prioritize collective dialogue over singular voices. Featuring thirty-six models, the show highlights how decentralized studios navigate global and local contexts while resisting the homogenizing effects of algorithms through the physical, tactile process of model-making.

Architecture Without a Center: Archipelagos presents an insightful look at the state of architectural production in Spain over the last decade. Curated by Malaga-based architect Álvaro Carrillo, the exhibition features thirty-six physical models that serve as the primary medium for understanding how contemporary architects, largely shaped by the economic crisis of 2008, have moved away from monumental or singular practices toward a more collaborative, interconnected network. The exhibition design organizes these projects as 'islands'—autonomous yet conceptually linked by shared ethical, material, and political affinities—allowing visitors to navigate and construct their own reading of current architectural debates. By highlighting the importance of the architectural model as both a communicative device and a form of resistance against digital consumption, the exhibition frames a broader conversation about diversity and complexity in the built environment. Rather than proposing a singular narrative, the show functions as an open geography of independent practices. The participating studios include Atelier Atlántico, Burr, Lacol, Takk, and many others, representing a wide range of voices currently redefining the architectural landscape in Spain through fragmented, project-based conversations.

Admission to the museum is free for all visitors. The museum is open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 20:00, with guided tours of the exhibition available on Wednesdays at 19:00.
