Alfredo Jaar Epilogue Video Installation Exhibition at MUCAC La Coracha

In Epilogue, Alfredo Jaar delves into a central pillar of his artistic practice: the reflection on memory, absence, and the ethical limitations inherent in representing human suffering. This work is a significant component of 'The Rwanda Project' (1994–2010), a collection developed following the artist's visit to Rwanda shortly after the 1994 genocide, serving as a poignant critique of both international apathy and media indifference toward global tragedies. Featuring an austere presentation and a measured pace, the video captures a fleeting, ephemeral figure that appears briefly before disappearing, leaving the viewer to confront an empty screen. By choosing to avoid explicit depictions of violence, Jaar instead employs a strategy of evocative absence, prompting an intimate experience that invites viewers to contemplate the complexities of the collective memory and the unseen implications of history.
