Exhibition summary

This exhibition presents ninety works from the Málaga City Council collection, spanning from the 19th to the 21st century, organized through a concept inspired by the 'Wunderkammer' or cabinet of curiosities. By eschewing traditional chronological or stylistic groupings, the show encourages visitors to draw their own connections between diverse artistic disciplines while exploring ecological themes and humanity's relationship with the natural environment.

Curatorial context

Nature in Resistance. Rethinking Our Collection is hosted in the Espacio Tres at MUCAC La Coracha and offers a unique visual and conceptual experience. Inspired by the 'Atlas Mnemosyne' of Aby Warburg, the curatorial strategy moves away from canonical art history models to foster unexpected dialogues between 90 pieces from the municipal collection. The selection includes works by a wide array of Spanish and international artists, ranging from historical landscapes to contemporary pieces that confront sustainability and the human impact on the planet. The exhibition invites viewers to contemplate the concept of 'ecotopia,' questioning whether a balanced coexistence between humanity and the natural world is possible today. By presenting works without a fixed order, the show challenges the viewer to engage with the art through a free and critical perspective, prompting reflection on our role in the preservation of the planet. Featuring artists such as Carlos de Haes, Juan del Junco, Louise Bourgeois, and Gabriel Orozco, the exhibition serves as both a retrospective of the municipal collection and a call to action regarding contemporary environmental issues.
