Curatorial context

The exhibition, running from October 22, 2025, to October 12, 2026, focuses on the significant set design work of Karel Svolinský (1896—1986) for Bedřich Smetana's operas. Svolinský, a renowned painter and graphic artist, also known for his stamp designs and stained glass, ventured into theatre design at age 44, creating over 33 sets primarily for opera. His debut was with Dvořák's 'The Jacobin' in 1940, followed by works for Janáček and notably, nearly half of his designs were for Smetana's operas, including 'The Devil’s Wall,' 'The Secret,' 'The Kiss,' and 'The Bartered Bride.' The exhibition features Svolinský's set design drawings, which served as blueprints for the stage productions. These works are characterized by their strong sense of space and color, conceived as paintings that retain their artistic impact. Complementing the designs are surviving original costumes, stage models, and period photographs, offering a comprehensive look at Svolinský's visual interpretations of Smetana's musical masterpieces.
